FIX FIRST. UPGRADE SECOND.
Try Ethernet or move closer to your router. Pause background downloads. Test on the device that buffers, at the time you usually watch.
Compare a wired test with Wi-Fi. If wired is much faster, start with router placement and wireless congestion. If both are slow, repeat at another time and contact your ISP with the readings.
Download speed is capacity. Latency is response time. Variation describes how much those response times change across samples.
This quick test includes HTTP overhead and measures the route to one network. Browser limits, busy devices, Wi-Fi and congestion affect the result. It does not measure packet loss, loaded latency or your plan’s maximum capacity.
Start with your local connection. For a VPN, compare privacy policies, device support, nearby servers and the full renewal cost.
Use the same device and network. Test without the VPN, then with a nearby VPN server, and repeat. A different route can change speed, but a VPN is not a guaranteed cure for buffering.

QUICK ANSWERS
Netflix recommends at least 5 Mbps for one 1080p stream and 15 Mbps for one 4K stream on a stable connection. Multiple streams and other devices need more total bandwidth.
The test and the video can use different devices and network routes. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi, pause background transfers and test the affected device before upgrading.
Not necessarily. Plans may have separate hotspot allowances, speed restrictions and network-priority rules. Check the specific plan before using it as a backup connection.
There is no guarantee. A VPN changes the route and adds overhead. Compare on and off on the same device; it cannot fix weak Wi-Fi.
Results remain in the current page’s memory. There are no accounts or analytics scripts. Test traffic goes to Cloudflare, and hosting services receive normal request information.
Streaming thresholds: Netflix Help Center.
Our lightweight browser test makes five small HTTP requests for latency, downloads up to three 8 MB samples, and uploads up to two 4 MB samples to Cloudflare’s public speed-test endpoints. Download and upload use the median completed sample in Mbps; HTTP latency is the median round-trip time, and variation is the mean absolute difference between successive latency samples. Each request times out after 12 seconds. Slow transfers stop early; incomplete tests do not receive a streaming verdict.
Small samples may understate fast connections. For a longer second opinion, use Cloudflare Speed Test or FAST.com. This site is independent of Cloudflare, Netflix, internet providers and VPN providers.
This version does not use analytics, advertising scripts, tracking cookies or accounts. It keeps readings only in the current page’s memory. Hosting services can receive normal request information such as your IP address; test traffic goes to Cloudflare under its privacy policy. External sites apply their own privacy policies.
The current provider links are ordinary unpaid links. If a link is replaced with a paid referral link, a commission disclosure will appear beside it. Compensation does not change speed-test readings.
