Wi-Fi speed vs internet speed: find the difference

By NoBandwidth · Updated October 5, 2026

Your internet plan connects your home to the provider. Wi-Fi connects devices to the router inside your home. A browser speed test crosses both connections when you use Wi-Fi, so a slow reading cannot identify which one is limiting performance.

Build a fair comparison

  1. Use the same laptop and pause background transfers.
  2. Run a test near the router over Wi-Fi and record the reading.
  3. Connect the laptop with Ethernet, disable its Wi-Fi and repeat.
  4. Move back to the location where the problem occurs and test Wi-Fi again.

Use the same test and repeat each condition. This short test measures a route to Cloudflare; it does not measure the raw local Wi-Fi link rate. Browser overhead and small sample sizes can also affect the numbers.

If wired is fast and distant Wi-Fi is slow

Start with router placement. A central, open location can be more useful than hiding the router in a cabinet. Compare nearby and distant rooms. Check the device’s wireless capabilities and the router’s documentation before deciding that new hardware is necessary.

If both are slow

Check the subscribed plan, the Ethernet cable and the ports involved. A slower port can limit an otherwise capable connection. Repeat at different times, check for competing traffic and collect results for your provider’s support team. One measurement is not proof that the ISP is throttling traffic.

Mesh or Ethernet?

Mesh equipment can help cover a larger area, but its effectiveness depends on node placement and the connection between nodes. Ethernet provides a useful baseline for a fixed device when wiring is practical. Choose equipment for the layout and bottleneck you observed, not an advertised speed number alone.

Before ordering, confirm compatibility, port speeds, return conditions and the technical skill required to set it up. Our networking directory links to options; it does not claim that every router listed has been tested by us.

Measure your connection first. Run the free internet speed test, then compare connection options.
