CONNECTION FIELD MANUAL
How to compare internet providers at your address
An attractive plan is useful only if it serves your exact address. Start with the FCC’s US broadband map to see provider-reported availability, then confirm service directly with the provider. Availability data and an advertised maximum speed are not guarantees of performance inside your home.
Check the full price
Write down the promotional monthly price and the price after it ends. Include equipment rental, installation, activation and any required bundle. Ask whether the quote assumes automatic payment or another discount. Compare the cost over the period you expect to stay, not just the first month.
Compare upload as well as download
Streaming mainly uses download bandwidth, while calls, backups and sending large files need upload capacity. Check both advertised speeds. Fiber, cable and fixed wireless can have different plan characteristics, but the actual offer at your address is what matters.
Understand data and network terms
Look for data caps, overage costs, fair-use rules and network management. For a wireless home plan, check whether the provider restricts use to the approved address. Read the contract length and cancellation charges before deciding a lower headline price is a better deal.
Use your current readings as evidence
Record several wired tests at different times, along with the subscribed plan. A Wi-Fi test in a distant room may reflect the local network rather than the provider connection. Ask support to investigate a consistent wired problem before assuming a switch is the only solution.
Match the plan to simultaneous use
Count screens and video calls happening together. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for one stable 4K stream; the household calculator adds planning headroom for multiple activities. A gigabit label alone does not solve wireless coverage or application-specific issues.
Before switching
Confirm installation timing, equipment requirements and any overlapping bill. Our directory labels business providers separately from residential options. It does not collect addresses or claim to produce a live availability quote; you check that directly with the provider.
Measure your connection first. Run the free internet speed test, then compare connection options.
