CONNECTION FIELD MANUAL
How much internet speed do you need for 4K streaming?
For one Netflix 4K stream, the published recommendation is a stable download connection of at least 15 Mbps. That is a per-stream guideline, not a promise that every device in your home can share a 15 Mbps plan without interruptions. Other services can have different requirements.
Start with the number of simultaneous screens
| Activity | Download guideline |
|---|---|
| One Netflix 1080p stream | 5 Mbps |
| One Netflix 4K stream | 15 Mbps |
| Two Netflix 4K streams | 30 Mbps combined estimate |
The two-screen figure simply adds two 15 Mbps streams. It leaves no room for cloud backups, games downloading, video calls or other traffic. Our household calculator adds 40% download headroom as a planning assumption. You may need more or less depending on what runs at the same time.
Test on the device that buffers
A laptop near the router can get a much stronger connection than a television behind walls. Run a test from the streaming device if its browser supports one, or compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Test at the time you normally watch, with your usual household devices active, then repeat with other transfers paused.
Why a fast connection can still buffer
The speed between your browser and one test network is only one part of playback. Wireless interference, a busy router, app problems, server congestion and the path to the streaming service can all matter. A single successful speed test does not certify Netflix performance.
Choose the next step
If Ethernet performs well but Wi-Fi does not, start with placement and interference. If several wired tests are slow, compare your readings with your plan and ask the provider to investigate. Compare alternative providers only after checking availability and the complete monthly price.
Measure your connection first. Run the free internet speed test, then compare connection options.
