CONNECTION FIELD MANUAL

How to test VPN speed fairly: on vs off

By NoBandwidth · Updated October 5, 2026

A VPN adds a route between your device and the sites you use. Encryption, protocol, distance and congestion can change performance. A VPN can sometimes change an inefficient route, but it is not a guaranteed internet-speed upgrade and it cannot repair weak local Wi-Fi.

Use a repeatable on/off comparison

  1. Choose one device and one network. Pause background transfers.
  2. Run the same test without the VPN and record download, upload and HTTP latency.
  3. Connect to a nearby VPN location and repeat.
  4. Repeat each condition at least once rather than trusting the highest reading.

Keep the time and location as similar as possible. Changing Wi-Fi, devices and servers together makes it hard to understand which change caused the difference. Never compare numbers from different test methods as if they were identical measurements.

Look beyond download speed

Upload capacity matters for backups and video calls. Latency matters for responsiveness. Our test reports HTTP round-trip latency and sample-to-sample variation; it does not measure packet loss or loaded latency. A low unloaded latency reading does not establish how a connection behaves during a large download.

Why the fastest result may not repeat

The network, browser and VPN server may be busier on another run. Small downloads can underestimate a fast connection. Compare a range of readings and test the activity you care about, such as your video app or meeting software.

Choosing a VPN connection

Compare nearby server locations, supported devices, protocol choices, full renewal cost and cancellation terms. Our directory includes several providers, with no claim that we have benchmarked them all. The owner’s NordVPN referral link may award free subscription time; that benefit is disclosed next to the link.

Start with a reliable local connection. If wired internet already performs poorly, investigate that baseline before treating a VPN purchase as a performance fix.

Measure your connection first. Run the free internet speed test, then compare connection options.
